John Canning Yates was the lead singer of Liverpudlian indie rock group Ella Guru, who went against the neo-psychedelia of their early Noughties contemporaries like The Coral and The Zutons by adopting a low-key take on Americana. Twenty years later and a solo artist of many years, Yates is still channelling the Lambchop and Low vibes on a gorgeous and deeply personal album The Quiet Portraits.
